Jenna Macdonald, Marketing and Sales Manager at Strand + CREW Vancouver Marketing and Communications Co-Chair
Can you tell us what originally drew you to join the CREW network? What are your key initiatives as Marketing and Communications Co-Chair?
I had only been in the real estate industry for a couple of years when I was first introduced to CREW. While I wasn’t completely sure what a volunteer role would involve, I was instantly drawn to the network when I began meeting the different women behind the scenes. I soon experienced how CREW enables you to expand your network through meeting other volunteers and members, attending events and workshops, and participating in mentorship programs. Now, five years later, I am still in awe of the dedication and coordination that goes into bringing our ideas to life, while working alongside a group of supportive and inspiring women.
As the MarComm Co-Chair, our main initiative is communicating the value that an individual or sponsor can gain from this network. Between eblasts, graphics & branding, and social media, our committee ensures that the CREW mission is spread throughout the industry to attract more volunteers and members, and ultimately, advance and support women in this community.
You have had a very successful career at Strand with continuous growth within the company, what originally drew you to this sector and what elements of your job excite you the most?
After graduating from university, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in marketing, although I wasn't entirely sure which industry to focus on. It wasn't until I started looking into the Vancouver real estate scene that I realized how seamlessly I could blend my marketing interests with this dynamic field. What excites me most is the diversity of each day and the opportunity to be involved in projects from their inception to completion. It’s exciting to see things that you helped create come to life, whether it be a project brand, brochure, signage, display suite etc.! Not to mention, I get to collaborate with so many different teams including development, interior design, and finance. Being part of the Strand team has been incredibly rewarding as it has exposed me to a wide array of developments including rental, condo, office, and industrial projects. I am constantly learning and growing and feel fortunate to be surrounded by like-minded, motivated people.
What advice do you have for young professionals and students interested in a career in commercial real estate?
My advice would be to start networking early (leveraging LinkedIn, going for coffee, attending events etc.). When I was a student, I remember finding this quite daunting as I didn’t think anybody would have time for someone just starting their career! However, I quickly learned that most people are willing to share their experiences and offer genuine advice. Vancouver's real estate network is relatively small, so building relationships can open numerous doors. Additionally, getting involved with networks like CREW can provide access to valuable events and scholarships tailored specially for students.
What is a work or personal accomplishment that you are most proud of?
Last year, I was presented with the Excellence In Service Award at the CREW Leadership Awards. Being recognized by CREW holds immense significance for me, as this network has played a pivotal role in shaping my career and skillset over the years. Through CREW, I've had the privilege of connecting with remarkable women and accessing invaluable tools that have been instrumental in my growth, both personally and professionally.
Outside of work, what are some of your hobbies/passions?
Outside of work, I'm a huge foodie, so I'm always trying out new restaurants around the city. I also love travelling – even if it's just a quick weekend trip nearby for a change of scenery!
