CREW Vancouver Celebrates International Women’s Day!

Tuesday, Mar 8, 2022

A recent study from CREW Network found that women continue to occupy just under 40% of the roles in commercial real estate; a statistic that has not changed much over the last 15 years. Hear from senior women in the industry on the importance of diversity, continued challenges and advice for young women progressing in their careers

  1. Why do you think it is important to celebrate International Women’s Day and diversity in the workplace?
  2. What do you think are the continued challenges or barriers facing women today? Do you have suggestions on how to overcome them?
  3. On International Women’s Day, what is the most important message or piece of advice you want to send out to young women thinking about their careers?

Nitasha Rajora, Director of Development, Etro Construction

Nitasha A1: “I believe it is important to recognize and celebrate IWD to see how far we have come and the increasing representation we see in BC and in Canada, especially in the construction industry. Throughout my education and early career as an Architect, there were very few women I could look to for mentorship and leadership, but I see that changing. As the Director of Development at ETRO Construction, I can do my part to change that for the current and future generations of women.”

Nitasha A2: “There continues to be many challenges and barriers facing women today and much of it has to do with access and parity. I believe it begins early with education for girls who need to be given the same access and opportunity to learn STEM and feel empowered to choose a less ‘traditional’ career path, with role models to support them . Although we will likely not see parity in our lifetime, it is the slow and steady progress in empowering women that will see this important change and growth in our society.”

Nitasha A3: “To ask questions and be curious. It is very easy to be dissuaded from certain career paths, due to the beliefs and biases of other people, and other generations. Although they may have the best of intentions, they may not have a current understanding of the job market, of innovations in technology and of new and exciting job opportunities in various fields of work, including the construction industry.”

Tara A1: “I think it is important to celebrate women everyday! International Women’s Day is just a particularly great day to do that collectively and take a moment to reflect on all of the ways Women's contributions support and strengthen the planet. Starting with giving life. Diversity (gender and beyond) in the workplace is essential for balance, to allow for critical thought and ultimately, change.”

Tara A2: “That is a broad question…I don’t think there is enough space here for the answer and it depends if we are talking on a global or local level. Deep rooted patriarchal structures contribute to self limiting beliefs that I would assume very few women are immune to. When those thoughts creep into my head, I try to focus beyond myself, the bigger picture of what needs to be done to progress - it feels less daunting, more supported as a collective effort in a goal for change.”

Tara A3: “Look forward with optimism and look around to see who needs encouragement and support. Helping others will always strengthen your resolve to get through challenges ahead.”

Alicia Chung, General Manager, Sales and Asset Management, Conwest

Alicia A1: “Our industry is made up of amazing female leaders who are dedicated to supporting the growth of other women in the industry. This is evident through CREW Vancouver - a volunteer-led organization for over 15 years! It’s important to celebrate the success and contributions of these leaders and to look ahead on how the industry can do better for future generations.”

Alicia A2: “For me personally, navigating career goals while balancing motherhood is an ongoing challenge that women face. I encourage women to have honest conversations with your company and clearly communicate your professional and personal goals. These conversations are an opportunity to create alignment and a path to mutual success.”

Alicia A3: “Pursue your passion, have a vision for yourself, and work hard towards the vision. Obstacles will come up throughout your career but a mindset to see obstacles as opportunities to grow will facilitate your path to success.”
