2022 National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Friday, Sep 30, 2022

Today, CREW Vancouver acknowledges and pays respect to National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. On this day, we honour the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities.

This year, CREW Vancouver will mark this day by renewing our commitment as allies. An ally is willing to listen, question and reflect and, more importantly, learn about Indigenous people, policies and history to understand what happened and what is still happening today.

Although not a required statutory day for the commercial real estate industry, we hope you take time out of your day to recognize and reflect on this important day. CREW Vancouver encourages you to take one personal action to further your allyship journey. To help you get started, the IDEA Committee has put together the following resources here

For additional vendors or resources, please explore the following:

  • Why do we wear an orange shirt on September 30th? It is to show solidarity with Indigenous people, acknowledges Canada's history of residential schools, Indian hospitals, and is a sign of allyship. Learn more about its story and history here.

  • MAKE Vancouver (https://www.makevancouver.com/) has launched a limited edition “Every Child Matters” Orange Shirt in support of the Urban Native Youth Association (UNYA). MAKE is donating 100% of the profits from this product directly to the UNYA which supports Indigenous youth on their journeys by amplifying and celebrating their voices.

  • This is a day focused on Truth and Reconciliation with Indigenous people, and the land in which we work. Indigenous communities have a unique relationship to land, as shared by Robin Wall Kimmerer in her book Braiding Sweetgrass

  • CREW Vancouver acknowledge our privilege to operate on the untreatied, self-governed land of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

We hope that you take some time out of your day on September 30th to honour, listen and reflect.
